Wk2 Wimba Session: Copyright Issues

This week’s Wimba session continued to explore the complicated issues that create and complicate copyright laws. A great take away from the conversation was learning the basics.  Learning the basics can help extract the black and white of the situation when it turns to the hazy and gray areas.  I enjoyed the interactive portion of the meeting that used a multiple choice game to practice applying these basics and isolate some of the outliers.  I also found the recap of the three main types of intellectual property helpful especially when considering using copyrighted materials for educational purposes.

During the practice segment, I couldn’t help but think of the current concealed weapons laws. I recently completed the requirements for my Concealed Weapons License and found similarities in the way the laws are laid out.  The basics are there to protect and offer guidelines but there will always be circumstances that fall outside these lines.  Therefore, each situation is evaluated by this common guideline and if needed given further investigation case by case.

  1. Interesting connection between copyright and concealed weapons laws, that's a connection I would never had made. Kind'a scary.

  2. Thanks for sharing! You're right, laws can be kind of scary sometimes. Especially since there will always be those that choose to misconstrue them.

The connection for me was based on the idea of protecting oneself. Intellectual property can be the source of someone's livelihood and deserves a defense of some sort. Law abiding citizens who legally possess and meet proficiency requirements to handle a weapon are exercising a similar type of defense.

Until next time, every good wish.
