Topic #1: Briefly share how you use music in your personal life: are
you a CD collector, someone who gets their music off the Internet through
friends or Peer-to-Peer networks or do you have a music subscription where you
can listen to whatever music you feel like listening to at the moment? Or are
you some combination of the above?
Music is a huge part of my day to day. I usually start my day with an alarm
that plays something to wake me and continue throughout the day with something
playing in the background whether it be in the car, at the gym or keeping me
company during work. I grew up playing music and have enjoyed witnessing the
evolution of music sharing. I
started collecting vinyl records from my father’s love and connection to music
and then my brothers introduced me to cassettes and then it went on the
cds. I do feel the commitment and
investment of time, energy and money to artists has shifted over the years but
there is a wonderful new connection that exists with the ease and accessibility
of music/file sharing these days.
I still pop in to the local record shops to expose myself to music I otherwise
would not encounter, but friends across the globe unite to share interests, can
suggest and share new music in the same way over the internet. I mostly use iTunes, Dropbox for music
exchange and even have music swap sessions with friends on occasion.
