Wk1 Reading: Copyright Issues part 2: What the Heck is Fair Use?

Yet another wonderfully terrifying hot topics covered this week was the emergence of Fair Use in relation to copyright laws. The video clip for a Fair(y) Use Tale did a super fun remix of what fair use is and why it exists. My favorite mention from this was the acknowledgement that Public Domain is necessary to maintain a thriving society. Fair use provides limitations as to the nature of the work you are referencing, how much of the work you are using, and it cannot devalue the original work. Another great tip when going the fair use route is to keep in mind that it is only a defense, not a right.

  1. Yeah, big hint that things are messed up when the interests of a small number of media companies go before the need of the whole culture to have a healthy sense of our artistic cultural heritage.
